My Pug Story

Annette Coffin---July 8 2013

Growing up I’ve always had a dog. After getting married we’ve always had at least two dogs. Usually, hunting, bigger dogs. Until one day my youngest son and I met a lady that bred pugs, not ever seeing one before, we thought she was adorable! She would run in a couple of circles and then have to lay down and sleep . We fell in love, but already having two dogs, we thought that may be too many. Our son begged and begged, we told him that if he really still wanted one, he’d have to wait one year for his birthday and we would get him one. Well the year was flying by and he still wanted the pug.

Enters our world baby Sunny. Well this was the best present he ever got! I was in love!!! Next, I learned about www.midwestpugrescue.com I had to go the web site, and there he was – Rodney! The sweet little pug with a tongue that curled up just like his tail! It was my birthday coming up and somehow my husband agreed, Sunny needed a brother, so we filled out the application, had the home visit, and were approved to be a part of the wonderful world of rescue. We thought we would help out and drive to get Rodney, who they guessed to be about one and a half, the same age as Sunny! Our son, Cody’s friend likes road trips so at 6:00 am he came over and joined us for a drive to Kansas! We went through MN, IA, MO and finally to Kansas. We also volunteered to bring Tug to his new home back in Minneapolis, so we picked up Tug and Rodney and drove back to MN in the same day!!

It’s official we are pug lovers! He fit right into our family of dogs, now Rodney makes 4! He was our first rescue dog, and we were in love! What a sweet boy!

Well, we also had our names in for fostering. So, the following year we got a call to see if we could meet up with a pug coming from the Dakotas, well of course we said yes!! Now comes Bacho, he was the saddest pug ever. He couldn’t even stand, I think his owner gave him a bunch of his seizure medicine and sent him on his way. We brought him to our vet, who I think is the best vet in the world (Dr. Baker, Broadway Robbinsdale Pet Hospital), he was thinking he may have to be put down, until we talked about his meds, which was obvious his owners did not take care of, he said he could be okay on the right medication, and he was right, what a sweet boy! We got his medication right and his seizures were few, we had him for about a month and they found him a home in Hibbing. That was really hard, I never thought I could let him go, but I did.

Now my babies are already four! I got an email for help, the older pugs – no one is adopting them, once again something I wouldn’t think I could handle, an older pug, but I asked my husband (who is wonderful)if we could take in this sweetheart Muggsy! So off we are again to get 13 year old Muggsy! This time he was in WI, not a bad drive at all!! What a great addition to our family – he is a sweetheart! He is more work, and if you take in an older pug, make sure you realize there are some things they can’t do. He doesn’t walk very well, he can’t see the best, doesn’t always go to the bathroom outside, but the love you feel when you hold him is so worth the extra effort.

I am very lucky that I am married to a dog lover.

Well I feel very lucky to have 3 pugs, who get along great with our 2 hunting dogs, 1 cat and two human sons. Please feel free to visit the pug rescue website and if you are unable to rescue please donate a little money (or a lot), or volunteer your time.

UPDATE -- Annette now has 4 pugs, and 1 hunting dog
