Picking an Insurance Company

David C. Coffin---September 30 2013

Finding the right insurance company can be a real pain. With a zillion options and different plans, what's right for your family? Here we will cover some of the major providers out there, and reflect on pricing and other options.

Geico

This is your friendly lizard and cavepeople generally pitching auto insurance at a discount of 15% or less. These guys have been around for a while and are owned by the likes of Warren Buffet et al.

Progressive

Here the friendly Flo shows the numbers that are distinctively lower than the other big names. They offer a full range of insurance plans and make a compelling case for their prices. They recently began offering a DriverJack that tracks driving habits to offer better rates.

Allstate

These guys are very reasuring in their commercials with a big friendly black man letting you know you are covered.

So organize yourself by making a shopping list throughout the week, and take this with you for your weekly trip. By doing this, you will prevent yourself from picking up inessential items that you like the look of - that's why the big brands spend a lot of money on packaging, by the way.

Take advantage of discounted offers. If you are making a list through the week, you will often see what discounts are available in the flyers that are sent out by the supermarkets.

Make sure you get coupons before you go to the store

Visit www.coupons.com where you can print off discount coupons at home that you can use in the store. You will find a large selection of coupons available, and you just pick the ones that you want and print them. It's like printing money, but it's legal.

Make sure you get coupon codes for your online shopping

When you are thinking of buying something online, make sure you visit www.gogoshopper.com to see what coupon codes are available for whatever you want to buy.

There are coupon codes available to give you good deals on anything from clothes to food to travel.

As well as checking the prices of the online retailers, work out how much the products will cost with the discount from the coupon code.

I'm sure you'll agree that these money saving tips will be easy to use and that you will definitely save money if you use them.

Finally, Pay Down the Credit Card

It's very easy to convince yourself that your credit card is an extension of your bank account, yet this just isn't the way they are intended to be used. First, set a reasonable limit for yourself and don't go over it. Pay off your credit card as it becomes due, preferably in full. And attempt to carry only a third of your total credit limit on your credit card. If you follow these rules of thumb your Credit Card will become a tool for you to use freely, instead of a burden to carry.

Cutting out spending for things other than food, drink, spending time with loved ones, shelter, and education will lead you to a more fulfilling life. Remember that if you make money a god, it will plague you like the devil.

Donate More

While it may seem counterintuitive to donate more while money is tight, it is better to think of others who may be worse off than you during tight money times.

appreciate Free Stuff

Community Churches and organizations will provide a free way for you to get out in the community and appreciate companionship without much up front expense.

Stop Gambling

Gambling may be another form of playing with money, but it can lead down a treacherous path. The greed and dopamine that might come into play can destroy the fun of the games.

If you still want to play games with money you can try a game of Hockey where...

You place three pennies in a triangle and pound down on one penny creating a gap between the two pennies in front of it. Then, you try to slide the remaining penny between the gap you just created. and eventually through a goal on the opposing side of the table created by the fingers or thumbs of your playing partner/opponent.

Share a Drink of Water, or a Home Brewed Cup of Coffee with a Loved One

Sharing is a key medicine of the sick conditions we find ourselves in. Sharing with God in our prayers and sharing with loved ones will brighten the path to the promised land.

Good Relationships Don't Cost a Thing

Being with family and friends can be times of great joy, need we only remember to enjoy our short time together.

Be Innovative with the Toys you Already Have

Watch a child play with an empty cardboard box, the center of a roll of paper towels, and a piece of scrap wood and share in the delight and peace of their enjoyment.

When money flow is tight, it's appropriate to cut back on the self-indulgent expenses we've come to accept over many years.

As working Americans, we all desire to save at least some of the money we make. While paying bills and dealing with the ever rising price of gas makes this seem impossible, there are a few “tricks of the trade” which can leave us surprised at just how much money we were able to keep in our checking accounts by the end of the month. What’s more, these money saving tactics may have the biggest impact when practiced at work.

Commuting to work decreases our gas tanks and increases the numbers on fuel pumps. Simply put, the more we drive, the more we spend. The amount of money we spend on gas can be reduced if we take advantage of more “social” options of mobility, such as car pooling or public transportation. In the city where I work (Minneapolis, Minnesota), a convenient Metro Transit system makes it both easy and affordable to get to and from work. Most notably, the Light Rail system has various stopping points throughout the metro area, extending from the Mall of America all the way to the heart of downtown Minneapolis. At various stations throughout its route, the Light Rail system offers free parking to those who wish to “park and ride.” A two dollar local fair is charged for each trip on the train, adding up to twenty dollars per week if one chooses to take advantage of this on a daily basis. This may bode well for those who pay over thirty dollars at each visit to the gas station.

When working an eight or nine hour day, the temptation is always to eat out for lunch, especially when one’s place of employment is located in a busy metropolitan area. In my case, I’m surrounded (and tempted) by countless ethnic and fast food joints, all conveniently located in a central location connected via skyway to the building where I put in my nine to five. The culinary choices seem limitless, and the amount of money that is spent can be as large as one’s daily appetite (which, I suspect, can get pretty big). Buying groceries and packing a lunch presents an economical way to reduce the amount of money spent during break time. Your checking account and your health will be more robust in the long run.

Ah, caffeine, the age-old fuel that gets us going in the morning and leaves us primed for those long afternoons. As corporate America forever tells us that we must produce to our maximum output and potential, how can we live without coffee? Who can resist the urge to grab a late from Starbucks or Caribou? Who can resist the urge to take an afternoon walk down to the local Dunn Brothers? As we all know, none of these establishments are particularly known for their cheap prices, and one can wind up spending just as much on coffee (if not more) as drinks at a bar. What with $3.91 per medium late, prices can add up pretty quickly. It’s much better to spend ten dollars on a bag of coffee beans that will probably last the whole week. Not only will your pocket book thank you, but your coworkers will as well. Share the wealth and share the coffee by purchasing in bulk.

Remember, the grass is always greener when you can actually see the green.
