Festival of Lights

David Coffin---September 6 2013

Whether you're putting up Christmas lights or lighting a Hanukiyah (menorah), tis the season to spread happyness and cheer. Here you will find lighting ideas for Christmas Lights and Chanukah. After the Maccabees revolt, fought with brains and heart, the rededication of the second temple, the Jewish people made a holiday of it, Chanukah. Then, years later Jesus' life brought a new wave of forgiveness found world round today.

I'm here to give some ideas for your lighting arrangements.

Christmas Decorative Lighting

Go Big

It's great to bring holiday cheer to your family, but tis even better to bring cheer to family and neighbors. When I was flying into Minneapolis recently, the Christmas lights that were visible from the plane gave me a sense that Christmas is soon to come.

I wistfully remember the Christmas lights my dad put on our home. We had carolers, reindeer and a huge Santa Claus face. A wonderful feature of our home was the Christmas tree etched on the side of our home, it was two stories tall, green and red. The candles and snowmen lined the walk shining out as a welcome hand and a touch of roman elegance. And my dad lit his deck with a couple well placed strings around the glass doors. L.E.D. the Way

If you would like to try "the new old fashioned way" then deck your halls with Light Emmitting Diodes LEDs to bring the holiday spirit. While you may be averse to change, these technological marvels can be strung together with great efficiency whereas traditional lighting has a practical limit.

If you want prelighted greenery, a net of lights or even if you want shivery icicle strings, you can get some bright LED Christmas lights from EnvironmentalLights (weblink).

Add a Tablespoon of Tradition and a Dash of Modern. Don't forget to put some holiday spice into your decorative lighting.

Don't Overdo It

The object is not to do so much that it blinds little children that walk by. The only thing worse than not going big enough, is making disharmony with your home. Give your guests a sense of the continuity and strength and warmth of your home. Hanukiyah (menorah) Lighting

When recognizing the rededication of the "second temple" it is important to follow the way set in place by thousands of years of tradition. This will give you and your family a sense of security knowing that your ancestors were lighting the hanukiyah in the same fashion as your family.

For the technically inclined, the menorah should be lit 18 minutes before sundown, and if you've got the chutzpah, light it on the left side of your sidewalk leading to your front door.

On December 22 begin lighting the menorah by using the Chamush to light the first candle and continue lighting an additional candle, right to left, each day of Hanukah.
